Idyllwild 2008

This year we begin our 24th summer of running. In the last three years 30 of the teams and individuals that attended camp won their state meet and 8 coaches were recognized as "Coach of the Year." The Idyllwild camp features outstanding running and team bonding recreation at high altitude on forested running trails. Idyllwild: August 10-15, 2008.

Program:
Each of the four camps will offer the same standardized running program:
"dynamic warm up routine"
5 workouts that explore different types (and purposes) of running
4 afternoon workouts (athletes broken into four groups) During the week they will rotate through (spending one hour on) - pool running drills with Aquajoggers, form work, race strategies, and video analysis.
8 clinics covering key training and racing elements
4 optional advanced clinics - open to all runners

Staffing:

Mike Erb is now coaching at Marquette University and former head coach for the University of Redlands. A graduate of Allegheny College in Pennsylvania, Erb was a four-year letterman for the Gators, captaining the NCAC Champions his senior year. He was a two-time NCAC champion in the triple jump and was also named All-Conference in the decathlon. Mike has coached 105 All Conference athletes, 13 Conference Champions, 10 National Champions, 4 All Americans and 1 National Champion. Last year Mike's womens team finished 3rd in the conference, and had 4 all-conference performers and finished 10th in the NCAA Western Regionals with one All-Region performer. Mike will be working at our Idyllwild and Malibu camps.
Steve Scott is the American record holder in the mile (3:47.69) and ran his 1500 meters in 3:31.76.  He has run 136 sub 4:00 miles - the most in the world!  Steve's 5K time is 13:30 - the old world Record!   Steve Coaches at Cal State University San Marcos. Steve is a four-time Olympian and one of his sports top clinicians and named one of the nicest athletes around by Sports Illustrated.  Steve is tentatively set to be a guest speaker at camp.
Coach Brent Thorne has been coaching some twenty two years, eighteen at Torrey Pines HS as head cross country and track coch. In that time the cross country team has gone from 22 members in 1988 to 90 this past few years. Coach Thorne abd the TPHS Falcon boys have won 6 league titles, 5 CIF Div 1 titles (now three in a row) and finished as high as 7th at the State Meet 2002 and 2003. The girls suad has won 9 league titles and 2 CIF titles, runner up 3 times with 8 state meet apearances with a top finish of 3rd in 1998. Always looking for ways to improve his coaching he plans to coach several more years at Torrey Pines.

Coach Glenn is back for his second year on the Runners Workshop staff with over twenty years of running, racing and coaching experience. He is an award winning Duathelete (Running and Cycling races) as well as an experienced ultra distance runner. In 2004, he won the Malibu Scramble Adventure Race with the first place time of 17 hours and 23 minutes. Coach Glenn is passionate about running and hopes to teach the same passion to his athletes.
Mark Celestin founded Runner's Workshop in 1985, and will direct his 71st camp in the past 22 years. Mark coached at Los Alamitos High School for 10 years and was selected as Orange County Coach of the Year in 1989, and Orange County Teacher of the Year in 1999. Mark was a 1:51.2 800-meter runner and mile relay national qualifier at U.C. Irvine.
Manny Bautista - Coach Bautista will be busy with the Olympics this year and hopes to return next summer!

 

Manny has been a top collegiate coach for the past 20 years at Mesa, Grossmont, Kansas State, and Cal Poly SLO. He is a 9 time recipient of the PCC Coach of the Year honors and has been recognized 3 times as a California Coach of the Year. Manny's teams have won 4 State Championships. Manny is a 4 time USA National Team coach, 1996 Olympic Site Supervisor and is the 2003 USA Pan American team coach. Manny was also an All American runner and1984 Olympic Trails qualifier. Manny brings great international coaching experience to our program. Coach Bautista is tentatively set to be a guest speaker at camp.

Camp Recreation: The recreation at the Idyllwild camp is peerless. High and low ropes courses, climbing wall, 3 sports field, volleyball, soccer, ultimate frisbee, indoor swimming pool and basketball gym. There is a one time $10.00 charge for the climbing wall and high ropes courses. These programs require specially certified professional instructors. Your one time fee of $10.00 allows unlimited use of these programs during free time. Each evening features a different theme night activity - campfire, casino / carnival, 50's music and trivia night, talent night, and dance.
